Last May, a searching mother called on organized crime groups to agree to a truce in the face of the violence that is taking place in Mexico. On the 30th of that same month, the president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador He spoke out in favor of it and asked the cartels not to be violent. More than 20 days after that, the first group spoke in a video, it is the Northeast Cartel (CDN).

The recording was broadcast on social networks, it quickly went viral, dividing opinions, some people branded the hitmen as cynical, pointing out that they have been the cause of bloody events. In the video, nine hitmen are seen standing in front of a white wall, wearing black tactical gear and brandishing rifles, light machine guns and Barrett rifles. The man in the middle is the one who reads the message addressed to the Mexican president.

“Mr. President, due to the statement you gave at your press conference, regarding the request of the mother seeker from Sonora, where they requested a truce, this organization (CDN) accepts it, without this for any reason implying weakness, but that the peace and well-being of Mexico be sought. We also have mothers, fathers, children and siblings, we are human”, says the hitman.

As if it were a joke or some kind of joke, the Cartel Del Noreste #CDN sends a message to López Obrador where they say that they are united for peace in Mexico. It also mentions that they are united or allied with the #CDG of Matamoros. After all the innocent people who were killed and… pic.twitter.com/QW0VAgErsH

He goes on to say that regardless of their call (to be good people and stop violence) they have already entered into conversations with the Gulf cartel Matamoros division and are “in peace talks.” “We know the underlying problem, from the year 2000 to date, violence has taken over the country. We know that it is a problem that you inherited and we are willing to do our bit”.

They ask for certainties

The message continues, it says that the entire population can benefit from a transitional justice law and in the same vein, he asks President López Obrador with whom in his government his legal representative can contact. “That is why we are now asking you, as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, what will be the legal mechanisms to be sure that the peace agreements will be respected.”

In a cordial way, the hitman ends the message, “Without further ado, we await an answer from you and we send you a cordial greeting. Sincerely, your safe servants of the Northeast Cartel.”

The message of peace is somewhat contradictory, since That same day, a video was released in which hitmen from the Northeast Cartel bloodily murdered a member of another criminal group.

hugs not bullets

This is the first position that a cartel makes after the call for Delia Quiroa, spokesman for the National Collective of Victims of March 10, to agree to a truce. Although the president had already called criminals on previous occasions to “behave well.”

According to La Vanguardia, at the end of 2022 López Obrador pointed out that Mexico’s security strategy of “hugs, not bullets” is yielding results and assured that his government has registered a decrease in the rate of intentional homicides.
