Everything seemed to indicate that the Gold Cup was going to be Diego Cocca’s first major tournament at the helm of El Tri. But in less than a week the whole panorama of the Mexican team changed and now it will be Jaime Lozano who directs the Aztec team. On June 25, Houston’s NRG Stadium will host the start of the Mexican team in the Gold Cup.

The Mexican team has not raised its head in recent years. From the Gerardo Martino cycle to the present, El Tri has suffered major sporting failures: they lost two Concacaf Nations League, lost a Gold Cup, were eliminated from the Qatar 2022 World Cup in the group stage and have been dominated by the United States in the region.

Diego Cocca could not reverse this bad image, Well, the 3-0 defeat against the USMNT was a hard blow that made the board of the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) take action on the matter. Now it is Jaime Lozano who, temporarily, will lead Mexico in this Gold Cup.

The first opponent of the Mexican team will be Honduras, a team with which they have only lost once in the last five games. The last Honduran victory dates back to October 2017 for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers in Russia. On that occasion, Honduras beat El Tri 3-2.

However, the present of Honduras is not so encouraging. The ensemble directed by Diego Martin Velásquez lost to Canada 4-1 in March for the Concacaf Nations League. Similarly, the Honduran team It comes from losing to Venezuela, a team that is going through a transition period in its process.

Mexico and Honduras are part of Group B in the Gold Cup. This sector is also made up of the teams of Haiti and Qatar. The current champion of the tournament is the United States.
