Americans remain critical of the government's handling of the US-Mexico border

Only 23% of Americans say the government is doing a good job of dealing with the large number of undocumented immigrants What do they seek asylum at the border, while more than three times (73%) thought it is doing a bad job, in a survey conducted by Pew Research Center to 5,115 US adults, June 5-11, 2023.

The new poll also showed that nearly half of Americans (47%) believe that illegal immigration is a very big problem in the countrycompared to 38% last year.

Public views on possible actions to address the situation at the border They haven’t changed much in the last few years.according to analysis of the survey by Amina Dunn, a research analyst who focuses on US policy at the Pew Research Center.

About half (52%) say it is very important to require people seeking asylum in the US to apply before traveling to the border.

And 49% say that it is very important to increase personnel and resources to patrol and monitor the border.

Views of illegal immigration as a national problem

Public perception of illegal immigration as a major national problem, which eased somewhat in the past year, it has recovered to 2021 levels.

Republicans are still far more likely than Democrats (70% vs. 25%) to rate illegal immigration a major national problem. In both parties, slightly higher percentages now say illegal immigration is a bigger problem than last year.

When asked in general which party do you agree with most on immigration policy, more Americans say they agree with the policies of the Republican Party (41%) than the Democratic Party (31%).

About a quarter (26%) say they disagree with either side on this issue.

About half of Americans (51%) say they have followed the news about the number of people seeking asylum at the US-Mexico border at least somewhat closely. Republicans are more likely than Democrats (60% vs. 46%) to say this.

Immigrants continue to arrive at the border hoping to find asylum in the US.

What are the public priorities to address the immigration situation at the border

When asked about some potential government actions the US should consider to address the large number of asylum seekers at the border, about half of Americans (52%) say it is very important for the US to require people to apply for asylum before traveling to the United States.

Other priorities include increasing the staffing and resources available to patrol and police the border (49% say this is very important); reduce the number of asylum seekers (45%); and providing safe and sanitary conditions for asylum seekers once they arrive (43%).

Partisan Priorities for the US-Mexico Border

Both Republicans and Democrats they agree that various immigration goals are at least somewhat important.

For example, 92% of Republicans and 73% of Democrats say it is very or somewhat important increase personnel at the border, although many more Republicans consider this very important.

Majorities in both parties also say that it is important to require people to apply for asylum before traveling to the border and reduce the number of asylum seekers.
