How to set up your Apple ID security keys on an iPhone

Julian Castillo

Protect your iPhone and keep your Apple account safe by setting up security keys for your Apple ID. These FIDO certified keys add an extra layer of protection to your Apple devices. Before beginning the setup process, it is important that you verify that you meet the following requirements:

To ensure a successful security key setup, you will need at least two FIDO-certified keys that are compatible with Apple devices.. These keys are physical devices, such as USB keys or smart cards, that allow you to authenticate securely.

Besides, make sure all your Apple devices that you’re signed in with your Apple ID have iOS version 16.3 or later installed. This is essential to ensure compatibility with security keys and to ensure that they function correctly.

Another essential requirement is to have two-factor authentication set up for your Apple ID.. This added security measure requires that, in addition to your password, you verify your identity through a second form of authentication, such as a verification code sent to your trusted device.

Once you’ve confirmed that you meet these requirements, you can follow the steps below to set up security keys on your iPhone to further secure your Apple account:

1. On your iPhone, open the Settings app and scroll until you find your name at the top. Touch your name to access your personalized account settings.

2. Once inside your account settings, select the option “Password and security”. Here you will find a variety of options related to the security of your Apple ID.

3. Look for the section called “Security” and in it, you will find the option “Add security keys”. Tap this option and follow the on-screen instructions to add your FIDO-certified security keys. This process may require you to physically connect the dongle through a USB port or perform wireless pairing.

4. Once you’ve added your security keys, it’s a good idea to review the devices associated with your Apple ID. This will allow you to have full control over the devices that have access to your account. Go to the “Devices” section within your Apple ID security settings and perform a thorough review.

5. It is important that you keep the option “Keep me signed in on all active devices” activated for those trusted devices where you want to avoid repeated authentications.

6. However, if there are devices that you no longer want to have access to your account, select those devices from the list and choose the option to sign out of them. This will ensure that only the devices you choose have access to your Apple ID.
