Civic and pro-immigrant groups urge United States President Joe Biden, Miami, Florida, to implement a new designation of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) that protects those fleeing “poverty and repression” in Nicaragua and avoid your deportation.

More than twenty pro-immigrant activists demonstrated on Tuesday afternoon in front of the offices of the Immigration and Citizenship Service (USCIS) of Miami to denounce the harassment policy to the undocumented by the governor of Florida, the Republican Ron DeSantis, and to ask President Biden for the “redesignation” of TPS to “provide relief to thousands of Nicaraguan immigrants”.

“Stop being a coward,” they tell Biden

“It is time for you, Mr. President, to act and stop being a coward”said bertha sandlesone of the people who protested Biden’s delay in expanding the TPS program for Nicaraguan migrants who suffer “due to deteriorating conditions” in the Central American country.

Under black umbrellas that read the phrase “TPS Now” and with banners, protesters called on Biden to grant a new TPS designation “If you don’t want your legacy to be leaving thousands of people without any immigration protection and in the hands of the xenophobic and deportation agenda of governors like DeSantis”.

The organizers said in a statement that “Nicaragua has seen a record number of citizens migrate, mostly to the United States to flee poverty and government repression” of the Central American country.

In this context, they criticized the fact that Biden made a “cowardly and limited” decision last week when “it only decided to extend the relief (from TPS) under the existing designation of Nicaragua“, which left out thousands of Nicaraguans who have been living in the United States for decades and who are eligible for a new designation, they stressed.

The pro-immigrant groups explained that the so-called “redesignation” of the TPS is a tool that Biden can use to “provide relief to thousands of immigrants from Nicaragua”, by protecting them from deportation and giving them the benefit of employment authorization to support their families. families.

The vigil in front of the USCIS offices was organized byrAmerican Friends Service Committee (AFSC), the Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC), Student Power Network, and Seeds of Resistance, among other pro-immigrant groups.
