Man in Mexico sold his 14-year-old daughter to pay off debt; now justice sentences him to 18 years in prison

After handing over her 14-year-old daughter to a subject to settle an economic debt, in the municipality of Villa Victoria, in the State of Mexico, Gerardo Domínguez Sánchez received a sentence of 18 years and 9 months in prison for the crime of human trafficking.

According to local media, The abuse against the minor began in October 2019 when she was 14 years old. The girl was locked up and forced to work for two months after being handed over by her father.

However, three months later he managed to escape and asked the authorities for help, who began the corresponding investigations.

According to official information, In June 2022, elements of the Investigative Police managed to capture the subject and transferred him to the Almoloya de Juárez prison, he received a sentence.

In addition to his prison sentence, Gerardo Domínguez received a fine of 1,932,708 pesos (approximately $113,060 dollars), and additional amounts of 63,958 pesos (approximately $3,741 dollars) as reparation for moral damages and 183,430 pesos (approximately $10,730 dollars) for property damage.

For the United Nations Organization (UN), this case is just a sample of the gray context that Mexico is experiencing, since in February of this year it reported that the rate of victims of human trafficking increased by 67.3 percent between the years 2020 and 2021.

According to data from the World Report on Trafficking in Persons 2022, in that period they went from 1,316 to 2,202 victims in Mexico.
