Venezuelan faces criminal proceedings as suspected of causing a fire that killed 40 migrants in Mexico

Authorities in Mexico linked Carlos Eduardo “N” to the processthe second migrant related to the fire at the facilities of the National Institute of Migration (INM) in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, which left 40 people dead.

A judge singled him out for his alleged responsibility as the perpetrator of the crimes of homicide, injury and damage in the case of the fatal fire.

The Office of the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR), through the Crime Investigation Unit for Migrantsaccuses Carlos Eduardo “N” of being one of the migrants who started the fire at the facilities last March.

The FGR reported that the evidence presented was sufficient for the judge to link the Venezuelan migrant to the process for the crimes of homicide, injuries and damages. by the fire in the provisional immigration stay in Ciudad Juárez.

He indicated that the judge set a period of four months for the closure of the investigation and established informal pretrial detention as a precautionary measure.

After the tragedy, in addition to officials from the National Institute of Migration (INM) and guards from a private company who fled the fire without helping the migrants, at least three Venezuelans were accused of having started the incident by setting fire to the mattresses provided. at the immigration station in Ciudad Juárez.

Between 2014 and so far in 2022, 48,423 migrant deaths have been reported worldwide, of which 3,134 occurred in the United States and 1,622 in Mexico, according to the migration data portal. However, that is a minimum estimate because most deaths go unrecorded.
