Student fatally shot a classmate in front of a Pittsburgh school

Authorities reported that a student shot and killed another classmate early Wednesday outside a school in Pittsburgh.

The suspected shooter was captured shortly after a foot chase, according to police.

The cause of the shooting, which The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said occurred around 7:25 a.m. on the steps outside Oliver Citywide Academy, a full-time special education center that serves grades 3-3, remains unknown. 12.

No other injuries were reported and Police said they found a weapon at the scene.

The names of the victim and the shooter have not been released, but police said they both attended school and were under 18 years of age.

Authorities said the student, who was injured while walking to school, was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

“We believe, based on the information we have and the video we have been able to see, that we have the actor in custody and there is no potential threat to the other schoolsPittsburgh Major Crimes Commander Richard Ford said during a news conference at the school.

Maria Montano, a city spokeswoman, said most of the students were still on their way to school when the shooting occurred and the buses were diverted to another school building. While the students who were already in the place were kept in the building.

Classes were canceled for the day after the shooting.

The shooting came just over a year after another student was shot at the same school.

Marquis Campbell, 15, was murdered in January 2022 while sitting in a school van waiting to go home.

The alleged shooters, two brothers Campbell knew from another school, were charged earlier this year with murder and conspiracy.
