CDC Alert Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Raw Cookie Dough; there are 18 cases in 6 states

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention investigates the case of 18 people sick with salmonella in six states: California, Idaho, Missouri, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. Two of them were hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported in connection with the outbreak.

Between February 27 and May 2, 2023, public health authorities confirmed 18 cases of Salmonella infection in six states, the CDC reported May 23. Federal and state outbreak investigations revealed that at least half of them reported eating raw cookie dough. from the quick-service pizza chain Papa Murphy’s in the days before the onset of symptoms.

After the cases were confirmed, Papa Murphy’s, based in Vancouver, Washington, stopped selling its raw chocolate chip cookie dough. and your bar dough this week.

According to authorities, the actual number of people sick is likely to be higher than the reported number, and outbreaks may not be limited to states with known illnesses. Some people recover without medical attention and are not tested for salmonella, according to the CDC.

In addition to Papa Murphy’s cooked menu items, the chain is known for its Take ‘N’ Bake line of products, including pizza dough and cookie dough. Products are sold ready-to-bake and are intended to be fully cooked before consumption.

For now, according to the CDC, most people infected with salmonella experience symptoms including diarrhea, fever, and stomach crampswhich usually begin between six hours and six days after ingesting the bacteria.

Anyone experiencing more severe symptoms, such as diarrhea and a fever over 102 degrees; diarrhea for more than three days that does not get better; bloody diarrhea; Vomiting so much that you can’t keep fluids down or signs of dehydration; you should call your health care provider.

Most people recover without treatment after four to seven days, according to the CDC.
