The governor of California, Gavin Newsom, celebrated this Thursday as a victory for his state the withdrawal of a $1,000 million investment from Disney in Floridawhich would have yielded some 2,000 administrative jobs.

“It turns out that authoritarian policies have consequences. More than 2,000 jobs that will be welcomed back with open arms in the Golden State. Thank you for doing the right thing,” Newsom said on social media.

This Thursday, The entertainment company Disney announced that it will discard plans to build an office complex in Florida, with an investment of $1,000 million dollars.s, citing “changing business conditions,” according to a company memo.

The withdrawal of the Disney project represented a loss of about 2,000 jobs for Governor Ron DeSantis’ statewho is expected to join the fight for the Republican candidacy for the 2024 elections next week.

After the Disney news broke, the governor of California testified about recent Florida policy, but highlighted the opportunity that an investment such as the one contemplated by Disney would represent for the Golden State.

“Authoritarian policies have consequences. This announcement is a victory for California and the tens of thousands of Disney employees, who know they can live in a state where they are respected and that they can be safe,” Newsom said.

Disney is dealing with a complicated advertising environment and a massive writers’ strike, just like the rest of the entertainment industry. Earlier this year, the company announced it was cutting nearly 7,000 jobs to try to cut costs..

This Thursday, in a separate announcement, Disney confirmed the closure at the end of September of its Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser resort, at its Disney World park in Florida, a year after it opened.

The land in Lake Nona, in the Orlando, Florida metropolitan area, will add 2,000 jobs to the Disney projectmany of whom would relocate from California.

So far, the company Disney has not informed about its change plans before the withdrawal of the millionaire investment in Florida.
