A total of four advanced life support ambulances responded to the scene, along with an air ambulance.

The accident is being investigated by the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the department said.

Due to the difficulty of the scene, authorities deployed interdepartmental Critical Incident Stress Management teams to assist those who responded to the accident.

“These are things that sometimes I don’t think people necessarily need to see as human beings,” Robertson County EMS Director/Chief Brent Dyer told NBC affiliate WSMV.

“One of the hardest things we will ever do, like anyone in the emergency services, is realize that nothing can be done for a child,” he added.

Although the investigation has not determined whether the victims were wearing seat belts, Dyer urged parents to always restrain their children when traveling in a car.
