Riverside County Sheriff publishes video of the moment before the shooting in which a Hispanic with schizophrenia dies

Video footage from a body camera of the moments before a shooting that killed a 33-year-old Hispanic man with schizophrenia in Moreno Valley were released by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident in which The Hispanic Jesús Antonio Rodríguez died at approximately 12:31 pm on February 6, 2023 in the 25400 block of Filaree Avenue, in Moreno Valley.

According to reports, Rodríguez’s mother called 911 to report that her son was under the influence of alcohol and possibly drugs, and that he was acting aggressively against her.

In the published material, the audio of the call to 911 was presented, in which the mother told the dispatcher that she had a “son 5150”, who was aggressive but had not hit anyone.

Police code 5150 refers to a law that allows a person with mental disorders to be involuntarily detained for psychiatric evaluation if they are deemed to pose a danger to themselves or others.

It was mentioned that Rodríguez was in possession of a club with spikes at one end..

In a statement, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said that, When the bailiffs arrived at the residence, Rodríguez ran to his room and began yelling at them from the door.. The sheriffs tried to control the situation, but he (Rodriguez) continued to be aggressive and uncooperative.

The Hispanic had in his possession a kind of wooden club with sharp metal points at one end.

bailiffs twice used a Taser, but it had no effect on Rodríguezwho appeared to be heading towards officers when he was shot.

Paramedics came to give medical attention to the Hispanic man, but They determined that he had died at the scene of the shooting..

Relatives of Jesús Antonio said the man was having a mental health crisis when sheriffs came to the home. They mentioned that the Hispanic man had a BB gun, which they told 911 dispatchers when they called for help..

The bailiffs cleared the house before entering, and when the relatives entered the house they heard shots.

Apparently, it was not the first time that bailiffs went to the home of Jesús Antonio Rodríguezaccording to family statements to ABC.

“The cops have been to my mom’s house so many times that they know she’s schizophrenic. She revealed to them that he had a BB gun, it was not a weapon. It was a compressed air pistol,” Jesús Antonio’s sister, Isabel Rodríguez, declared at the time.

“There’s no reason they couldn’t have shot it. They could have used a different type of method, especially since he is schizophrenic,” Isabel added.

The shooting investigation remains active. and is run by the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.
