Venezuela against the United States is the last game of the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic. The winner of this key will face Cuba in the semifinals and will be held at the Loan Depot Park in Miami.
Martín Pérez, the left-hander of the Texas Rangers, will launch for the Venezuelan team who also pitched against the Dominican Republic in Venezuela’s debut in the tournament.
Pérez pitched for 3.1 innings, striking out 4 batters, walking 2 and only allowing one run.. The 31-year-old lefty has pitched against much of America’s lineup during the Major League Baseball regular season.
Mike Trout is one of the players who has faced Pérez the most with 10 hits in 36 at-bats. Venezuela is the only team, along with Japan, that is undefeated in the tournament.
For his part, Lance Lynn will be the starter for the United States against Venezuela. Lynn pitched against Canada in the third game of the first round for Team USA.
Lynn pitched 5 innings in which he struck out 6 batters, walked one, and only allowed one hit, which was a home run. Part of the Venezuelan offense has connected up to 7 home runs to Lynn in the Major Leagues.
Catcher Salvador Pérez and José Altuve have two career home runs against the American pitcher. It is expected that there will be more than 35,000 people this Saturday at the Loan Depot Park in Miami.
For this round, starters are allowed up to 80 pitches, an increase after the first round that only allows 65 pitches.
The United States seeks to reach the semifinals for the second consecutive edition, while Venezuela will do so for the first time since 2009 when they fell to South Korea.
Cuba awaits the winner of this bracket for the game that will take place on Sunday in Miami. Only one semifinalist remains after the other key is defined between Mexico and Japan on Monday, March 20.
