Controversy took hold of social networks in the United States after a video emerged showing a group of young people throwing the wheelchair of a woman with a walking disability down the stairs of a bar.
Later it was learned that it is the hockey player from the University of Mercyhurst, Carson Briere, who in turn is the son of Danny Briere, interim general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers. Two colleagues who were with him that night were also punished for the incident.
The episode that caused controversy and outrage originated in a Pennsylvania bar when Briere and two other friends entered the bar, went up the stairs and one of them took the wheelchair that was parked in the corner, sat down, rolled it and then He got up to throw her down the stairs.
It was through social networks, specifically on Twitter and thanks to a person who identified himself as a worker at “Sullivan’s Pub” in Erie, Pennsylvania, that the discord clip was released.
“I usually don’t post anything serious on my Twitter, but something happened Saturday night and I can’t bear the thought of this kid getting away with it. In the video below, there is a MercyhurstU student and he is currently on the Hurst Mens Hockey team. Carson Briere,” he wrote.
Although the event occurred almost a week ago, it was Tuesday when this user named Julia Zukowski reported the event. The recording went extremely viral, garnering more than 13 million views.
Every action has a reaction and immediately the Mercyhurst athletics department began an investigation in which they confirmed the identity of those involved and their link to the house of studies. “We have placed all three on provisional suspension from their athletic teams in accordance with school policy, pending the outcome of the investigative process,” they said in a statement.
A day after this letter, the Flyers shared a second communication in which Briere accepted and apologized for his actions. “I deeply regret my behavior on Saturday (…) there is no excuse for my actions, and I will do everything possible to make up for this serious lack of judgment.”
After this fact, a collection of money was created online through GoFundMe and thus be able to buy a new wheelchair for Sydney, who even spoke about what happened on Twitter.
Hi, I’m Sydney and it was my chair that got pushed down the stairs. I am so grateful for all of Sullivan’s help in this situation and the kind comments I see on Julia’s post. I swear I really don’t want to keep a penny of the donated money, I’d rather give it to those who need it,” she wrote.
Carson is 23 years old and is in his third season with the Mercyhurst hockey team. According to information from the Erie Times-News, Briere was fired in 2019 by the Arizona State hockey team in 2019 for allegedly violating undisclosed rules of the institution.
