30 electric cars by 2030: this is Honda's strategy for the future

One of the steps that Honda revealed in 2022 in relation to its future projections was to publicize its steps towards electrification and the path to 2030, where the launch of 30 models worldwide with a volume production that will exceed 2 million units per year.

The project has already taken off through the acquisition of lithium batteries in each region where it operates. In North America it will have Ultium batteries from General Motors (GM)although the possibility of creating a joint venture dedicated to the production of energy sources is not ruled out.

In China, the collaboration relationship with CATL will be strengthened, while in Japan mini-EV batteries from Envision AESC will be acquired. On the other hand, it is currently developing solid-state batteries, where it built a demonstration line and invested about 43 billion yen to make it operational from 2024.

Regarding the electric vehicles themselves, by 2024 it will present two models of medium and large scale, which are being manufactured in conjunction with General Motors. China will see the birth of 10 EV models by 2027, while Japan will have a small model for commercial use in 2024 with a price of 1 million yen, to later accommodate mini EV and SUV models for personal use.

By 2026, Honda will use an EV platform that combines high-tech hardware and software called the Honda e:Architecture. In 2027, the Asian manufacturer plans to launch affordable electric models on the market with autonomy and a price, according to the company, which may be as competitive as gasoline-powered vehicles in North America.

China has among its plans to host two electrified car factories in Guangzhou and Wuhan, in addition, they plan a “dedicated production” in North America. Also, two sports models and one flagship are among Honda’s plans as part of its process towards carbon neutrality.

Finally, to achieve all this, an investment of approximately 5 trillion yen will be allocated to the area of ​​electrification and technology, while the general research expenses will be borne separately and will be 8 trillion yen.
