Although zoos are places where the health and breeding of the animals exhibited there is ensured, this is not always the case, as happened in one of these parks located in the state of Guerrero, in Mexico.

Its about Chilpancingo Zoo, better known as Zoochilpanwhere a series of complaints of mistreatment of animals and the disappearance of others revealed the serious situation that existed in that enclosure.

And it is that, after an investigation carried out by the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources of Guerrero (Semaren), several anomalies were detected under the charge of the former director of the zoo José Rubén Nava Noriega.

One of the most serious situations discovered was the sacrifice of four pygmy goats to be cooked and eaten at new year celebrations.

In this regard, the head of the Department of Wildlife of that Secretariat, Fernando Ruiz Gutiérrez, reported that there were 10 specimens of pygmy goats, of which the now former director had four to use as food at the end-of-year inn. He even revealed that they were cooked on the premises of the same zoo.

This is José Rubén Nava Noriega, former director of the Zoochilpan zoo, according to official information released by the head of Semaren, he cooked the goats for the New Year’s Eve dinner and sold the Watusi cows.

“With this fact, the health of consumers is put at risk because they were not animals suitable for human consumption,” said the official.

Other irregularities detected were the illegal sale of four watusis (a bovine breed native to Africa), nine Barbary sheep and a macawplus a zebra was traded for red deer without authorization and 10 snakes are missing.

The real destination of the animals is still unknown and if they have the adequate conditions for their maintenance, as required by a legal exchange.

It should be noted that all this came to light after a deer was left to die in Januarywho was rescued by inhabitants of the Jardines de Zinnia subdivision, who was transferred to the place with minor injuries and nevertheless died.

Regarding this fact, the Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources of Guerrero, Ángel Almazán Juárez, informed the Efe agency that, as a result of the investigations, it was learned that the specimen was not adequately cared for, as it was sutured without anesthesia and its antlers were cut.
