89 points. That number is what separates LeBron James from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record to become the leading scorer in NBA history.

After his triple-double of 28 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists of this Tuesday (victory in overtime of the Los Angeles Lakers by 123-129 against the New York Knicks), LeBron’s countdown fell below 100 points and already he only needs 89 more points to surpass Abdul-Jabbar’s legendary mark of 38,387 points since 1989.

Since this season began, the question in the NBA was not whether LeBron would surpass Abdul-Jabbar but when would i

With an extraordinary performance at 38 years of age and in his 20th year in the NBA, LeBron is averaging 30.2 points, 8.5 rebounds and 7.1 assists per game this season.

The Lakers have two other road games this week: on Thursday against the Indiana Pacers and on Saturday against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Taking into account LeBron’s scoring average this year, the record could happen -as long as there are no unforeseen events such as injuries- next Tuesday against the Oklahoma City Thunder or Thursday against Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Milwaukee Bucks.

Both games will be played in Los Angeles.

“Being here and knowing that I’m about to probably break the most sought after record in the nbasomething that people said could never be achieved, is super overwhelming for me and super cool“Said LeBron at the Lakers media day at the start of the course.

“Every time my name is mentioned among the greats, like Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or others, it’s super overwhelming.“he added.

Last season, LeBron became the top scorer in NBA history if points scored in the regular season are added to those from playoff gamesbut the official NBA record does not take playoff scoring into account.

The points scored statistic is not the only one in which LeBron has left his mark since This same Tuesday he surpassed Steve Nash and Mark Jackson to become the fourth highest assistant in the history of the league.

This record has more merit if one takes into account that LeBron trails only three legendary pure point guards: John Stockton, Jason Kidd and Chris Paul.
