At least three people were killed and more than 400 injured in a 5.9-magnitude earthquake that struck northern IranIranian media reported this Sunday (01.29.2023).
The quake struck late last night near the city of Khoy, located in Iran’s northwestern West Azerbaijan province and close to the border with Turkey, the Tehran University’s Tehran University-based Iran Seismological Center reported.
The tremor was followed by at least 10 aftershocks.
So far, the Iranian authorities have reported the deaths of three people.while 447 have been injured, the Tehran Times reported.
The Red Crescent Society has sent two planes to the area to assist in rescue operations, search for people and assist survivors with tents, blankets and food.
The Khoy area suffered a magnitude 5.4 earthquake two weeks ago that caused 120 injuries and also damaged some 200 homes.
Iran has great seismic activity and numerous earthquakes are recorded.
The most serious to date in Iran occurred in December 2003 and June 1990, when 31,000 and 37,000 people lost their lives, respectively.
More recently, In November 2017, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake caused 620 deaths. and more than 12,000 injured in the northwestern province of Kermanshah.
