Pistons: what is their function and importance for your vehicle

Pistons are a key component in the operation of a car engine. Its main function is to transfer the energy generated by the combustion of fuel in the cylinder to the vehicle’s transmission, which allows the wheels to move and propel the vehicle forward.

Pistons are hollow cylinders with an open end at the top and a closed end at the bottom. Inside, they have a compression ring that seals the cylinder and prevents fuel and air from escaping. The pistons are connected to the connecting rods by a piston pin, which allows them to move up and down within the cylinder.

When the engine is running, the pistons move up and down in the cylinders in a process known as a four-stroke cycle. During the first stroke, the piston moves up, allowing fuel and air to be injected into the cylinder.

During the second stroke, the piston moves downward to compress the fuel and air, which generates the energy needed to move the vehicle. During the third time, combustion occurs and a large amount of energy is generated. During the fourth stroke, the piston moves up again to expel combustion debris and prepare the cylinder for the next cycle.

Pistons are critical components in engine operation and must be in good condition to ensure proper performance. However, due to wear and the heat generated by combustion, the pistons can be damaged and weaken over time.

This can cause problems such as galling or compression leakage, which can require expensive repairs. It is important to maintain regular vehicle maintenance to ensure that the pistons are in good condition and to avoid engine problems.
