The Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) of Mexico reported that it will initiate a trial against six people for their probable responsibility in the crime of aggravated human trafficking, in a case that ended in tragedy due to the death of 53 migrants crammed into a trailer in TexasUnited States, in June 2022.
In a statement, the FGR indicated that the six people are probably related to the location of a tractor-trailer in the vicinity of Quintana Road, San Antonio, Texas, on June 27, 2022, where they were found. dozens of lifeless migrants, including women and children.
He added that after completing the respective arrest warrants and taking them before the corresponding judge, the Federal Public Ministry, “provided the evidence to obtain said link to the process” against Melesio “B”, Hermelindo “B”, Adrián “B”, Yoana “N”, Sheyla “B” and Jessica “P”, this “because of their probable responsibility in the crime of aggravated human trafficking.”
In addition, justified preventive detention was imposed on them as a precautionary measure. The FGR indicated that it continues with the investigations regarding the facts referred to.
On June 27, on a highway in San Antonio, Texas, a trailer was discovered with 85 people suffocated inside the box.
The coroner confirmed the death of 53 migrants, including 26 Mexicans, seven Guatemalans and 14 Hondurans, who were transported in the truck without ventilation and under high temperatures.
Three days after the tragedy, the FGR opened an investigation folder for the death of the Mexican migrants, while Central American countries, such as Guatemala, have joined a joint investigation.
The find was classified as the deadliest human smuggling tragedy in US history.
The region is experiencing a record migratory flow with 2.76 million immigrants detained at the United States border with Mexico in fiscal year 2022.
