This Friday it was learned that the United States will host the Copa América 2024 thanks to an agreement between the Confederation of North American, Central American and Caribbean Soccer (Concacaf) and the South American Soccer Confederation (Conmebol). The parties had been working on an agreement for about three months, before the World Cup played in Qatar 2022 between November and December 2022.
Through a statement with impressions from the president of Conmebol, Alejandro Domínguez, the announcement was made known. “Conmebol and Concacaf have announced today the signing of a strategic collaboration agreement to strengthen and develop football in both regions. The agreement includes competitions for women’s and men’s national teams and a new club tournament,” the letter reads.
“The Conmebol Copa América 2024 will be played in the United States, in the summer of 2024, and will include the 10 Conmebol teams and the six best Concacaf teams, as guests. This traditional Conmebol tournament will be co-organized by both confederations. Concacaf countries will have the opportunity to qualify for this competition through the 2023/24 Concacaf Nations League,” the statement added.
For his part, the president of Conmebol, Alejandro Domínguez, assured that both confederations “are united by historical and affective ties, but above all the passion, characteristic of all of America, for soccer and sport. We are determined to renew and expand our joint initiatives and projects. We want this passion to translate into more and better competitions and for soccer and its values to grow and strengthen throughout the hemisphere. Without a doubt, both confederations believe in big and we will work with this orientation”.
According to information from ESPN, possible venues in the various US cities that will host this event have already been evaluated, two years before the 2026 World Cup that will be played in three bands with Mexico and Canada.
The Copa América has historically been a tournament with the participation of South American teams, but this edition will be played by 16 countries; 10 from Conmebol and six guests from Concacaf. The last precedent for something similar occurred in 2016 when the Centennial edition was played.
