President Joe Biden spoke Friday by phone with the parents of Tyre Nicholsthe 29-year-old African-American man who died as a result of injuries sustained during a violent arrest made by five police officers in Memphisin Tennesseeto offer their condolences.
“During the conversation, the president praised the family’s courage and strength,” the White House reported.
The five officers were fired from the police force shortly after the event, which occurred on January 7. It was revealed Thursday that all of them are in prison and face various criminal charges, including second-degree murder.
Nichols’ family attorney, Ben Crump, asked Friday that the speed of the authorities in prosecuting the aggressors serves as an example for future cases of police abuse.
Police footage was released Friday of the beating that killed the young African-American, which according to family lawyers lasted about three minutes and was extremely violent.
Nichols was pulled over by officers for an alleged traffic violation and suffered a violent beating. Three days later he died from complications in several vital organs that were injured during the beating he suffered.
His mother warned in a press conference that the images in the videos are very unpleasant and asked that they not be shown to children.
Both the family of Tire Nichols and the authorities have made repeated calls for calm given the expectation that the content of the recording will generate protests and civil unrest.
