Many Google employees found out they were part of the company’s mass layoffs when they could no longer carry out their daily tasks; This is how an employee of Human Resources narrated it.
Dan Lanigan-Ryan worked for Google from Dublin, Ireland, as part of a team hired through consulting firm Morgan McKinley.
This Google employee worked in the company’s offices and for all intents and purposes was part of its team until the morning of January 20, when suddenly couldn’t do his job anymore.
Lanigan-Ryan recounted in an interview with Business Insider that that day, around 10:30 in the morning, local time, he was conducting an interview with an applicant to enter Google and his work was going normally.
However, on the other side of the Atlantic, Google announced the mass layoff of 12,000 employees as part of a restructuring to reduce costs and face an uncertain global economic scenario.
Google recruiter remembers that the call with the candidate was cut off at any momenthe looked for an alternative to reconnect, but he could not enter the internal site for Google employees either, minutes later his email was deactivated.
Lanigan-Ryan says she called her manager to ask what was going on and he, like other colleagues, received a response affectation of “technological problems”.
But it was then that news of the mass layoffs at Google became a worldwide incident and eventually reached the ears of Lanigan-Ryan, It was then that he found out that he had been fired..
“And then that was it. He was blocked from everything. And then I saw on the news about 15 or 20 minutes later that Google announced 12,000 layoffs,” the former Google employee said in an interview.
Google is another of the companies in the technology sector that has carried out massive layoffs and that until mid-January add up to around 190,000 cuts since the end of last year.
“Google didn’t contact me”
Like many other workers, Lanigan-Ryan did not receive any communication from Google before he was fired, but until he told his story He has not received any type of message either.
According to the former Google employee, he only had one communication from the consulting firm with which he was hired in which he was told to wait for a payment until February 3, when he formally finished his work and that he had to return his computer equipment. .
According to a Google spokesperson, who was questioned about the lack of communication with employees affected by the mass layoffs, told Business Insider that the company published the announcement on an internal blog on Friday and employees in the United States received emails about the decision.
However, it added that, in the case of employees in other countries, the formal notices were delayed due to necessary adjustments by the laws of each country.
