Peru: Protesters burn second border post with Bolivia

Anti-government protesters burned a border post with Bolivia on Sunday (01.22.2023)among other public venues, in the southern department of Puno, the second set on fire in the last three days, confirmed the Peruvian Ombudsman’s Office.

The institution reported that protesters set fire to an office of the National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration (Sunat) and a migration post in Yunguyo, a town located a couple of kilometers from Bolivia.

In addition, protesters set fire to offices of the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa) and the National Police.

In the town of La Joya, in the southern department of Arequipa, protesters held a policeman hostage as a result of clashes with law enforcement, the regional governor reported.

Protesters threw stones and tried to take over the police station, but the Police dispersed them by firing tear gas and pellets. “In the El Triunfo police station, 12 injuries have been registered up to now,” the regional governor of Arequipa, Rohel Sánchez, told the Latina television channel.

192 detainees released

Meanwhile, the Public Ministry indicated that, of the 193 people detained during the intervention of the National Police of Peru on the campus of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM), 192 have already been released and only one remains detained by having a valid a requirement.

It’s a statement, The entity indicated that the provincial prosecutor of the Fourth Corporate Criminal Prosecutor of Cercado de LimaBreña, Rímac and Jesús María initiated preliminary proceedings for the alleged commission of crimes against property (aggravated usurpation and damages) to the detriment of the UNMSM.

Last Friday, protesters attacked and set fire to the Desaguadero Binational Border Assistance Center (Cebaf), a customs center in the department of Puno, which borders Bolivia, reported the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The government warned that the attack on the customs post “harms bilateral trade with Bolivia” and “attacks the economy of thousands of Puno families“.

During this Sunday, according to the authorities, 78 blockade points have been registered on national roads distributed in 23 provinces, the majority in the south.

Concentrations and mobilizations have also been developed in seven provinces: Andahuaylas, Chincheros, Acobamba, Huancavelica, Lima, Carabaya and Yunguyo.

Since the protests against President Dina Boluarte began in early December, 62 people have died in clashes and in events linked to the marches.
