Gunman shoots 42 rounds in mass shooting that kills at least 11 people Saturday night at dance studio in Monterey Park

The attacker fired 42 times in the shooting that killed at least 11 people and wounded 9 more this Saturday night at a dance studio in the city of Monterey Park, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported Monday.

Authorities said that during a search of the suspect’s home in Hemet, Riverside County, a rifle, ammunition and material used for the manufacture of weapons were found.

Until now, The reason for the shooting during a Lunar New Year celebration is still unknown.in addition to the fact that the authorities do not know to what extent the massacre was planned.

“What led a madman to do this? We do not know. … This is a very complex investigation,” Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said during a press conference at the Hall of Justice in downtown Los Angeles.

The Sheriff promised that the police will work to find answers, and then the authorities will release to the public what is found.

At the Hemet home of the alleged shooter, 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, authorities executed a search warrant after the shooting on Saturday night and found ammunition and “items that lead us to believe that he was making homemade firearm suppressors” at the scene, Luna said.

The ammunition was found in containers and hundreds of bullets were also found.

On Saturday night, Tran entered the Star Ballroom Dance Studio, where he opened fire, first killing 10 people, a figure to which one more victim was added this Monday, according to authorities.

About 20 minutes later, Tran attempted to enter the Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio in Alhambra, about two miles from Monterey Park, with a modified 9mm semi-automatic pistol. This weapon was taken from him by 26-year-old Brandon Tsay, with whom the suspect confronted at the access door of the place before fleeing the site.

One of the victims was found in a vehicle outside the ballroom. and the authorities believe that it could be the first person to be attacked by Tran.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff noted that Tran was arrested in 1990 for illegal possession of a firearm..
