Google is working on developing its own version of a tracking device similar to Apple’s Airtag. Rumors suggest that the device has the code name “Grogu”.
According to the insider Kuba Wojciechowski, the device will incorporate a speaker, as well as support for Bluetooth low energy consumption and ultra-broadband connection capacity thanks to a UWB module.
Wojciechowski explained that he found out about the “Grogu” project after he realized that Google included a new location feature for Fast Pair in the developer center. This function will allow any Android device to connect more quickly via Bluetooth to that tracking device.
It should be noted that, at least for now, There are no further details about “Grogu”However, in case of operating in a similar way to the Airtag, it should be a small accessory capable of being attached to any object to know its exact location.
It is speculated that the first phones to be compatible with these devices could be the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro.. This is because they both support UWB modules, something that is not yet a standard in the mobile device industry.
While the release date for these new devices is still unknown, Wojciechowski speculates that it could happen during the next I/O event this year. This would not be entirely unreasonable, taking into account that in this kind of event Google usually presents the products that it will launch on the market soon.
privacy issues
One aspect that Google will have to consider in case the launch of these tracking devices is confirmed is what concerns the privacy of its users.. The importance of this is fundamental, especially after the problems that Apple had to face due to the misuse of Airtags by users who used them to follow other people without their consent.
This situation reached the point that it became known that even car thieves used these devices to commit car thefts. Faced with this misuse, Apple was forced to launch an update to avoid this kind of situation.
