Severe winter storms have affected California in recent weeks, and with the possibility of more weather events, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) urged drivers to exercise caution when driving in extreme conditions.
The DMV advised Californians to stay off the roads if possible; and in case of the need to drive, take all precautions.
“The safety of the drivers is our main concern. The safest thing is to stay at home. But if you have to be on the roads during storms, you have to be careful and take basic safety measures,” said California Department of Motor Vehicles Director Steve Gordon.
Due to the intensity of the storms, some areas may experience flash flooding and high winds can cause debris and falling trees or branches, as well as leave other obstacles on the roads.
In the event of a strong storm, it is necessary to proceed with caution and seek alternative routes when necessary.
The DMV noted that it only takes 6 inches of water to reach the bottom of most passenger carswhich can cause you to lose control and risk getting stuck.
Among the safety tips that the DMV provides for drivers during severe weather events are:
- Don’t drive unless you have to.
- Reduce speed and keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.
- If weather conditions require the use of windshield wipers, it is advisable to use the low beam headlights.
- Keep both hands on the wheel.
- Stay alert and not distracted; never text while driving.
- Never drive near downed power lines.
- Pay attention and follow traffic signs and detours.
To help keep residents at home, the California DMV director mentioned that California residents can do business with the department remotely, thanks to the fact that most services can be done online.
Among the procedures that can be done online, is the renewal of vehicle registration.
DMV offices can experience intermittent service interruptions during storms, as well as power outages. If you must go to a DMV office, it is recommended to check online to confirm that it is open.
