Why the steering wheel of your vehicle vibrates and how to solve it

Ronald Ortega

The steering wheel of our vehicle is one of the most vital parts for safe driving on the road. With it we will have full control of the direction, therefore, it is extremely important to identify when something goes wrong.

In this sense, there are several reasons why the steering wheel of your car may vibrate. Here are some of the most common causes.

Wheel imbalance: If one or more of your vehicle’s wheels are out of balance, it can cause the steering wheel to vibrate. This is because the unbalanced wheels are not distributing the weight evenly, causing the steering wheel to vibrate.

Wheel wear: if the wheels are worn, they can cause a vibration in the steering wheel, thanks to the fact that the worn ones are not supporting the weight of the car evenly, which causes the problem in question.

Alignment issues: If the vehicle has been bumped or subjected to strong force, there may be wheel alignment issues. This can cause a vibration in the steering wheel, since the wheels are not pointing in the same direction.

Damping Issues: If your car’s shock absorbers are damaged or worn, they can cause a vibration in the steering wheel. Shock absorbers help absorb vibrations and bumps from the road, so if they are damaged they will not be able to fulfill their function and a vibration will remain in the steering wheel.

How to fix the problem

To fix these problems, you must first take your vehicle to a mechanic to have it checked out. There it will be possible to determine the exact cause of the vibration in the steering wheel to later make recommendations on the required repairs. It may be necessary to balance the wheels, replace the wheels, perform an alignment or replace the shock absorbers.

Although, it is also necessary to emphasize that if the steering wheel vibrates on wheels and at high speed, it is possible that it is a problem with the tire balancing system and its alignment.
