According to official reports, at 3:27 pm, after reaching an altitude of 2,818 feet, the aircraft was struck by birds situation that caused the damage to both engines of the Airbus A320.

Faced with the emergency in the air, pilot Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger and his co-pilot Jeffrey Skiles tried to remain calm at all times and in moments decided to declare an emergency to the control tower and splash down in the icy waters of the Hudson River.

The maneuvers of the pilots achieved that the impact in the water will save the lives of all the passengers and crew, while the rescue efforts lasted for several hours.

“We have a heroic pilot who saved 154 passengers. We have a miracle on the Hudson,” said then-New York Governor David Paterson.

The splashdown story was described as “the miracle of the Hudson River” which reached the big screen in 2016 in the movie “Sully”, directed by Clint Eastwood, where actor Tom Hanks played the captain of Flight 1549, Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger.
