The FIFA Disciplinary Committee opened this friday disciplinary process against the Argentine Football Association (AFA) for possible breach of articles 11 (offensive conduct and violations of the principles of fair play) and 12 (misconduct of players and officials) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, in the World Cup final between Argentina and France.
On December 18, Argentina was proclaimed world champion after beating France on penalties after the 3-3 that was recorded after extra time. During the celebrations on the pitch, some players made gestures that provoked complaints from the French Football Federation (FFF), which regretted the “abnormal” mockery against Kylian Mbappé.
Specifically, they were referring to the chants in the locker room led by the goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez and in which he asked for “a minute of silence” for Mbappé, author of the three goals for France during the final. In addition, the same Martínez, on the grass, was placed on his genitals the trophy for the best goalkeeper in the World Cup (a glove)an action captured by television images and photographers.
FIFA, as reported in a statement, will also initiate a procedure against the AFA for possible non-compliancealso in that same party, of article 44 of the Regulations of the Qatar 2022 World Cup and the Marketing and Media Regulations of the same tournament.
In addition, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee communicated the sanction to the federations of Ecuador, Mexico and Serbia of different economic fines for the songs and inappropriate behavior of their fans during the World Cup in Qatar.
In this way, the Ecuadorian Football Federation will have to face a fine of 20,000 Swiss francs (19,943 euros) in addition to assuming the sanction of the closure of a part of his stadium (the stands behind the goals) “as a result of the chants” of his fans during the match he played against Qatar.
For his part, the Mexican Football Federation must pay a fine of 100,000 Swiss francs (99,715 euros) and will have to play a match behind closed doors (a sanction that FIFA suspends during a trial period) for the chants of his fans during the Mexico-Poland and Saudi Arabia-Mexico matches.
By last, the Serbian Football Federation was fined 50,000 Swiss francs (49,857) and with the closure of a part of its stadium (25 percent) for breaching articles 13 (discrimination) and 12 (misconduct of players) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code for the chants “and the inappropriate conduct” of his fans during the Serbia-Switzerland match.
