After the Qatar 2022 World Cup was played, the actions in La Liga of Spain were restarted and the different clubs are back in the fight for their objectives, be it those who want the championship, get into European positions and those who want to maintain the category.

Among the latter is the Majorca, directed by Javier ‘Vasco’ Aguirre. The Balearic Islands were able to stay in La Liga last season thanks to the ‘miracle’ worked by the Mexican coach who came from being kicked out of Liga MX.

Now the club that wears red has added 22 points out of a possible 48 (16 games), being located in the middle of the table and nine of the relegation places. Despite this hopeful outlook, Vasco Aguirre is calm and calls not to get excited ahead of time.

“We haven’t even reached the middle of the season yet, so you have to remain humble in victory and defeat,” said the experienced coach after the first victory of the year, 1-0 at home against Valladolid.

He also recalled that his team lost at the end of 2022 against Getafe: “We arrived on a good run and if you let your guard down or raise your nose, they will blow it up.”

In the press room there were one or another journalist who was hopeful for the work of Vasco, even comparing it with the feat of Lionel Scaloni in reviving an Argentina that had just lost everything to win everything, including the World Cup in Qatar 2022. Mallorca dream of returning to play European competitions like in some seasons more than a decade ago.

“Here in Mallorca (Scaloni) is full and deserves everything that is happening to him,” Aguirre emphasized without further raising the spirits of the fans. The Argentine coach spent several seasons as a player on the islands, for which he is fondly remembered; even his wife is from that place.

The next challenge for Vasco Aguirre’s Mallorca will be on Saturday, January 14, when they face off against a direct rival (9th) such as Osasuna.
