House Republicans Lobby the President Joe Biden to demand from his Mexican counterpart, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorstop the crossing of irregular immigrants on their way to the United States.
“It is essential that you take advantage of this opportunity to meet with the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to make it clear to him that our neighbor to the south has the duty to stop the flow of illegal immigrants (sic) who pass through their country on their way to the United States”, says a group of Republicans in a letter sent to Biden.
The letter was signed by the representatives when they were still “elected” because the Republicans took a week to agree to name Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House and to be able to swear him in.
Among the signatories leading the letter are Monica De La Cruz, Brian Babin, Michael Burgess, Lance Gooden, from Texas, and 10 other representatives, who also ask to address drug trafficking.
“[El presidente Biden] You must make it clear to President López Obrador that he must do more to stop the flow of illegal drugs into the United States,” the congressmen say.
They welcomed Biden’s visit to the border in El Paso, Texas, but criticized his immigration policies and took the opportunity to raise their demands before the North American Leaders Summit in Mexico.
“We hope this visit will show you the national security and humanitarian crisis created by your administration’s failed border security policies and spur you to act,” they say.
It is expected that now that they control the ChamberRepublicans toughen their stance on immigration issuesin addition to unleashing more pressure on Mexico, complicating the bilateral relationship.
President Biden announced a few days ago new actions to accept 30,000 immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela through a system of appointments and sponsorships, but also imposing restrictions on arrival at the border.
