After a turbulent 2022 due to his controversy with the ATP authorities over the mandatory vaccination against covid-19 to which he refused, Novak Djokovic began 2023 by winning his first final by being crowned in the Adelaide tournament. However, the Serbian was also the protagonist of a curious episode in which he would end up running his brother out of the stands in the middle of the game.
Djokovic is known for the strong character that he has shown on some occasions. After losing the first set of the final this Sunday against Sebastián Korda, the Serbian racket’s reaction was to point to the ‘box’ where his staff was with his brother Marko, who usually accompanies ‘Nole’ in various tournaments.
In the transmission you can see how Novak tells him with a gesture to withdraw and he is heard saying in Italian “Fuori” (out). Later they get up and leave.
Through social networks, the fact did not go unnoticed by many fans and had a certain virality. In another image shortly after the order of ‘Nole’, you can see how Marko is no longer in the ‘Box’.
The reason for Djokovic’s reaction is unknown, but it could possibly have been a maneuver to try to focus on his brother’s suggestions.
He revived to equal a Rafa Nadal record
The match was not easy for the Serbian, because in addition to losing the first set, he had to raise a ‘Match Point’. He would finally end up taking the final with partials of 6-7 (8), 7-6 (3) and 6-4 in 3 hours and 9 minutes.
This would be the eighth tournament where Novak has been able to raise a match point after achieving it in Vienna 2007, Basel 2009, US Open 2011, Shanghai 2012, Doha 2017, Wimbledon 2019, Dubai 2020 and now Adelaide 2023.
With this result, Djokovic equals a record held by Spanish Rafael Nadal by becoming the fourth tennis player with the most individual titles won. Both have 92 and are only behind Ivan Lendl (94), Roger Federer (103) and Jimmy Connors (109).
