A 32-year-old Iranian, suspected of preparing an “Islamist” attack with cyanide and ricin, was arrested in western Germany, the police and the general prosecutor’s office announced on Sunday (08.01.2023).

In a search at his residence in Castrop-Rauxel (North Rhine-Westphalia), the agents found “toxic substances” intended to commit an attack, according to a statement from the general prosecutor’s office and the Münster police.

The detainee is “suspected of having prepared an act of violence” seriously threatening the security of the State by seizing cyanide and ricin to commit an attack of an Islamist nature”, the investigators indicated.

The suspect must appear in the coming days before an investigating judge who will decide whether to order preventive detention for him, the prosecutor’s office said.

“Chemical Bomb” Attack

Another person was also arrested and remanded in custody, the investigators added.

According to Bild newspaper, the German authorities received a notice several days ago from a foreign intelligence service of the threat of a “chemical bomb” attack.

Germany has been rocked in recent years by several Islamist attacks, including a mass attack at a Christmas market in December 2016 that killed 13 people and injured dozens.
