A day like today, but in 1950, one of the greatest legends of Mexican music was born: john gabriel. And it has been through his lyrics, melodies and incomparable presentations that the singer’s legacy has been kept alive among the new generations.
Despite the fact that today, the so-called ‘Divo de Juárez’ has a great reputation worldwide, his life was not exempt from dark and difficult chapters that helped him grow personally.
One of the most controversial episodes in his life is, without a doubt, his detention in the Lecumberri Prison.located in the east of Mexico City, during the decade of 1969 for a period of 18 months.
But what was the reason for his imprisonment? According to Rosenda Puentes, daughter of the then director of the Palacio Negro de Lecumberri, she assured that the person responsible for the confinement of Juan Gabriel was the Mexican actress Claudia Islas.
And it is that Juan Gabriel was hired to sing at a private party, after having attended he was accused of allegedly stealing several jewels and a radio from the histrionisa. It should be noted that despite this version, Islas has repeatedly denied being responsible for the accusations against the famous.
“At that time, she was married to an important person, military or police. She gave him false testimony because he did not steal any jewelry; she just went to sing at a party. It never came out of him to say who accused him of that; I found out that it was her because, as she was known, that came out, and people close to him confirmed it to me, ”revealed the young woman in an interview with ‘Ventaneando’.
Despite his innocence, ‘El Divo de Juárez’ remained in these facilities for 18 months and it is believed that during that period he composed songs such as “I don’t have money”, “I’ve stayed alone”, and “We’ll go hand in hand”.
Although throughout his career Juan Gabriel preferred not to remember this bitter chapter in his life, it was documented in his film “My Life”, which he starred in in 1982.
