The world of surfing is in mourning after the experienced brazilian surfer Marcio Freire died on Thursday while surfing off the coast of Portugal, known as Nazaré.

According to the Municipality of Nazaré, Freire, 47, suffered an accident while surfing in that town, which unfortunately caused his death.

The local authority stressed that other surfers they were in the water they proceeded to rescue their colleague and they took him to the beach where he was treated by lifeguards.

“the surfer suffered an accident while surfing that left him lifeless. The surfers who were in the water, and as defined in the safety plan, they proceeded to rescue the surfer to the beach where, at first, he was rescued by the rescue team,” the local authority explained in a statement.

However, the Municipality of Nazaré explains that efforts to revive to the brazilian surfer and saving his life proved fruitless and was pronounced dead minutes after the fatal accident.

“Despite all efforts, resuscitation maneuvers were unsuccessfulhaving been declared dead by the doctor present at the scene,” added the municipality in the official communication.

The surfer died after falling when practiced “towed surfing”a modality in which the surfer is dragged into a large wave by a jet ski or other vehicle.

Who was Marcio Freire?

Freire started surfing since he was little and throughout his career managed to travel all over the world sliding down the best and most iconic waves on the planet.

The 47 year old surfer He became one of the three representatives of this discipline to be known as the “Mad Dogs” after he managed to conquer a giant wave known as “Shark” on the beaches of Hawaii.

After conquering those waves, Marcio appeared alongside legends Danilo Couto and Yuri Soledade in the documentary “Mad Dogs” in 2016, being considered as the best representatives of this aquatic sport.

According to Brazilian media, Freire had extensive experience surfing giant waves. on different beaches where he had practiced this sport.
