January 5, 2023 became another Black Thursday for Sinaloa, as the state woke up to flames, blockades, shootings, and car thefts. The reason? Ovid Guzman was detained in Jesús María, a community in Culiacán that will go down in history for being the place where “El Ratón”, son of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmanfinally fell after that episode of October 2019 known as “Culiacanazo”.

The town is part of the mountain area that is located in the north of Culiacán. It has small houses and few luxuries, its population is barely 5,062 inhabitants. In social networks you can see photos in which you can see that it is a simple, dusty place, far removed from the opulence of the drug traffickers.

According to official information from the Culiacán City Hall, the inhabitants of Jesús María fish for catfish, mojarra and tilapia, which is why there is an important hydraulic work there, a center for the production of 21 million units of tilapia hatchlings and catfish for sale, according to the newspaper El Financiero.

This place borders to the north with Badiraguato, birthplace of “El Chapo”, to the south by the Central Mayor’s Office; to the east with the Municipality of Mocorito and the Union of Adolfo López Mateos, and to the west by the Union of Tepuche.

According to the newspaper Excelsior, the syndicate of Jesús María has been characterized as the place of various federal operations and also one of the areas where they have found clandestine laboratories.

Similarly, the community has been the scene of various demonstrations by its residents for federal elements to leave the entity. Perhaps that is why Ovidio Guzmán felt safe in that small place, at least until January 5.
