After the failure of Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with the Mexican team, El Tri is looking for a new strategist to start a process for the 2026 World Cup. Miguel ‘Piojo’ Herrera sounds strong for a second cycle at the head of the national team and in his latest statements he claimed to be the best positioned for the position.

In a conversation with TUDN, the former coach of Tigres UANL in Liga MX stated that his good performance during his time in El Tri 2013-2015 opens the doors for him to return.

“I am very happy for what I have done, for what I have worked to be in the next process, today they can say that I am running because there is no coach in the National Team, because I do not have a job, I know I am not the only one, it can It may be that I am not in that process and I am aware of what happened,” he said.

Herrera qualified that his departure was not sporting, so his numbers in the Mexican team would make him a creditor of the position.

“There is a natural revenge, I did not go for results, I delivered the results that they asked me for, it seems to me that I did things well, not better than many, but I did things well, just like everyone else who was eliminated in the Round of 16, but within the 78 here, the best ranked coach is me. I entered as a bomber, then came a process in which I think we could do things better, “he explained.

Miguel Herrera led El Tri for two years from 2013 to 2015. While he was in charge, he had 20 wins, 11 draws and seven losses. He left a goalscoring quota of 71 in favor and 36 against. He managed to be the CONCACAF champion and reached the round of 16 against the Netherlands in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

His departure was due to an attack on journalist Christian Martinoli at an airport, whom he referred to in his last talk with TUDN and stated that he would have no relationship with him. “I fought with a person, I fought with Martinoli, there is no good chemistry, there will never be, (but) I never fought with a medium,” he said.
