After the rain of information that arose from the early hours of this Thursday around the capture of Ovidio Guzmánson of the drug dealer Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmanthe Mexican authorities announced a press conference to provide details about the operation carried out in the city of Culiacán, Sinaloa.
The head of the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), Rosa Icela Rodríguez, will be in charge of revealing how the arrest operation was carried out, which represents a strong blow to the structure of the Sinaloa carteldue to Ovid performing high-level command and control roles within the criminal group.
Even the US State Department offered a reward of up to five million dollars for anyone who provided information on the location of Ovidio Guzmán, accused of conspiracy to distribute drugs.
Alert in Sinaloa
After Ovidio’s arrest, a series of violent events broke out in different parts of Sinaloa, such as dozens of drug blockades, confrontations at the Culiacán airport, and firearms being fired inside a prison in that state.
Due to all these events, measures were taken to protect the integrity of the inhabitants, such as the suspension of classes throughout the city of Culiacánand the message from the governor of Sinaloa so that, if possible, people do not leave their homes until security control is resumed.
In the same way, the airport of the capital of Sinaloa closed its operations, at least until 8 pm this Thursday, while the United States Embassy in Mexico issued a security alert for its citizensgiven the risk involved in traveling to that region at this time.
Another “Culiacanazo” was avoided
This is the second capture of Ovidio Guzmán at the hands of Mexican authorities, since the first occurred on October 17, 2019, when military elements located and captured Chapo’s son, also in Culiacán.
However, on that occasion the result was differentbecause upon seeing that the young man known as “El Ratón” fell into the hands of the soldiers, dozens of hitmen practically besieged the entire city of Culiacán until Ovidio was freed.
Subsequently, the president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador confirmed that he gave the order to release him in order to avoid further bloodshed. This event is remembered as the “Culiacanazo” or “Black Thursday”, since, like today, everything was recorded on the same day of the week.
The truth is that this blow to organized crime occurs just a few days after the visit that the President of the United States, Joe Biden, will make to Mexico on the occasion of the X Summit of North American leaders, where surely the issue Security will be one of the aspects to be discussed with López Obrador.
