Enzo Fernández has caused the first drama of the winter market after possibly stopping his move to Chelsea in the Premier League. ANDhe 21-year-old Argentine player will not arrive at the English club after there was no agreement with Benfica on the amount of the transfer.
The Portuguese team requested Fernández’s termination clause, for $120 million dollars, and if it wasn’t the $120 million, he would not leave for less. Chelsea offered a maximum amount of $85 million, but did not match the buyout clause for the Best Young Player of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
This increased the annoyance at the Portuguese club because they felt cheated by Chelsea. The German coach Roger Schmidt pointed out that what the English club did was disrespectful to the team and that they excited Fernández.
“We don’t want to sell Enzo. There is a club that wants him, he tempted him but they know that the only way is the 120 million clause. They are disrespectful, they are driving the player crazy. They acted as if they wanted to pay the clause and then they want to negotiate”, denounced the technical director
The player had also been criticized after he returned to the club at the end of December and played a game at half speed in the 0-3 loss against Braga where it was observed that he was not physically well after not training for two weeks in the celebrations in Argentina after the World Cup.
Fernández, after the 0-3 defeat against Braga, returned to Argentina to spend the New Year, a decision that the coach criticized because all the players were ordered not to leave the country to resume training for 2023.
Benfica is in first place in the Portuguese League with 37 points in 14 games, followed by FC Porto with 32 points. In the Champions League they qualified first above PSG and will face Club Brugge on February 15.
