Authorities arrest hit-and-run suspect who killed woman giving away toys on Christmas Eve in South Los Angeles

The authorities a suspect was arrested in connection with a hit and run incident that occurred on Christmas Eve in which activist Trina Newman-Townsend, a foster mother who gave away toys at a shelter in South Los Angeles, died, police said Thursday.

Hispanic Carlos Mayor, 55, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter after a court order was issued, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

Mayor Karen Bass is a Los Angeles resident and lives near the scene of the crash that killed 61-year-old Trina Newman-Townsend, the LAPD said.

Authorities did not immediately provide the details about the place or date the Hispanic was arrested.

The hit and run incident occurred at 3:25 p.m. on December 24 at 88th Street and South Broadwaywhen Newman-Townsend had just given out toys at a shelter and was walking back to her car, when she was struck by a vehicle, described by police as a blue midsize sedan and whose driver failed to stop to offer help.

Newman-Townsend, mother and grandmother, she was a retired minister and was raising two biological children and six adoptive children.

A moving memorial was held in honor of Newman-Townsend on December 29.

Dozens of candles lit a makeshift memorial on a sidewalk as devastated family, friends and residents remembered the beloved community activist.
