April Fool's Day: why it is celebrated on December 28 and the story behind the jokes

Every December 28th is celebrated the Day of the Innocents, date that is part of the general Roman calendar of the Catholic Church. Currently, people often joke with each other, but originally, this is a day with a tragic history.

In other countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Brazil, France, Finland, Austria, Australia, Germany, Italy and Belgium, it has a very similar date that is celebrated on April 1 and is the “April Fools’ Day”

What is April Fool’s Day?

This date refers to the decision of the King Herod I “El Grande” to kill all children under 2 years old born in Bethlehem. All with the intention of eliminating Messiah.

In the Gospel of Saint Matthew, some kings, known today as the “Wise men”, They traveled to Jerusalem to witness the birth of the Messiah.

In the Old Testament he dictates this prophecy: “When a new star appears in Israel, a new king has been born who will reign over all nations.”

After Herod’s decision to murder all the children born in Bethlehem, the Magi hid the baby Jesus, the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph, offering them as a gift gold, frankincense and myrrh.

An angel warned Saint Joseph to flee to Egypt, shortly after the army murdered all the little ones “Innocent saints” who lived in the city.

Why are they joking?

The Day of the Innocents is celebrated in Mexico, Latin America and Spain, over the years the tradition has changed, since jokes and deceptions are usually made on these dates, all in reference to to the scolding that the Magi did to King Herodthat they did not return to tell him where the baby Jesus was.

After making the joke, it is common for the person to say a phrase like “that innocence is worth it” or “innocent dove that you let yourself be fooled, because in this Day of the Innocents nothing should be borrowed”, since according to what is borrowed on this date, it is not returned.

The most common jokes They are faking pregnancies, changing the sugar bottle for salt, changing the hours on the clock or some phone joke.
