A study published in the journal PLOS One suggests that men with a low libido are nearly twice (1.82 times) as likely to suffer an early death.
Researchers from Yamagata University studied more than 20,000 people (8,558 men and 12,411 women) in Japan for more than a decade, to examine the links between sexual interest and mortality.
For the research, participants were asked to fill out surveys on sexual interest during health checks. Those who reported a lack of sexual interest tended to be older, were likely to drink more, had diabetes, laughed less, had some variation of psychological distress, and had attained lower educational levels.
The results showed that the men over 40 with low libido were 1.94 times more likely to die of cancerr and 1.36 times more likely to die from heart disease.
Men with lower sexual desire also declared they lacked ikigai, a Japanese term for the reason for having a worthwhile lifea quality that some may describe as having a “will to live”.
Bad habits can lead to low sexual appetite
Scientists believe that the men’s sexual urges were reduced due to bad habits of life.
The scientists could not explain why there is an association between libido and longevity; however, a Constant lack of sexual interest can be a sign of bad habits that increase the risk of chronic diseases, such as smoking, drinking or overeating, according to the researchers.
