Mississippi executed ex-Marine who raped teenage girl for 4 hours before strangling her

A man who confessed to brutally raping and murdering a teenage girl stranded on the side of a Mississippi highway more than two decades ago has been executed by the state on Wednesday.

Thomas Edwin Loden Jr., aged 22, became the second inmate to be executed in the state in years when he was pronounced dead at 6: 16 pm after being injected with a lethal cocktail of drugs

Loden pleaded guilty to capital murder, rape and four counts of sexual assault in the murder of Leesa Marie Gray, of 20 years, in June of 2022. He had been on death row since 2022 when he pleaded guilty .

Loden, a former recruiter for the US Marine Corps, said he was “deeply sorry” for killing Gray, who soon he would be in his last year of high school.

The next day, Loden was found “lying on the side of a road with the words ‘I’m sorry’ etched into his chest and apparent self-inflicted lacerations to his wrists,” according to court records.

The convicted murderer said that he knew he could never take back the anguish he caused by killing the teenager in his last words on Wednesday.

“During the last 58 years, I have tried to h do a good deed every day to make up for the life I took from this world,” he said. “I know these are mere words and they cannot erase the damage I have done. If nothing else brings you today, I hope you have peace and closure.”

Loden, who was dressed in a red prison jumpsuit and was Covered by a white sheet and strapped to a stretcher, he concluded by saying “I love you” in Japanese, authorities said.

The Gray’s mother, Wanda Farris, attended the execution. She said that she forgave Loden years ago, but she believes in the death penalty.

“I don’t particularly want to see someone die”, she said. “But I do believe in the death penalty. … I believe in justice.”

Farris said her daughter was a “carefree” teenager who always smiled and wanted to become an elementary school teacher .
