The LAPD reported that officers responded to the call for “a big fight” at 6: 54 pm on Friday on the block of Valley Boulevard.
” While participating in a local community event, Council Member De León was approached by several members of the community, who blocked his path of travel as he attempted to exit the building,” the Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement Saturday.
“It was during this encounter that an allegation was made that a man, identified as Jason Reedy, headbutted, pushed and punched the councilman De Leon,” added the police.
The authorities mentioned that the councilman and the activist continued the altercation outside the building, and that Reedy left before LAPD officers arrived.
“Shortly after the incident, officers completed an assault report on Councilmember De León. Several hours later, Reedy also filed an assault report at a local police station, where he was charged that Councilman De Leon grabbed and threw Reedy,” police said.
Councilman Kevin de León’s office said in a statement that Reedy and other activists were at fault. He mentioned that the councilman was headbutted by Reedy, a member of his staff was elbowed in the face, and that a volunteer was also injured in the altercation .
On Friday morning, De León had attended his first Los Angeles City Council meeting. Angeles after almost two months after the scandal over the publication of a recording in October of former council president Nury Martínez, outgoing council member Gil Cedillo, De León and union leader Ron Herrera expressing racist comments.
Martínez and the union leader resigned days later, Cedillo lost in the June elections this Monday is his last day as councilor, while De León apologized and made it clear that he had no plans to resign .
