The Alaska Division of Elections announced the unofficial results of the elections of 2021 on Wednesday night. The state’s new ranked-choice system has been a long and complicated process.
Alaska Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy won re-election and will serve as Alaska governor for a second four-year term, according to estimates from The Associated Press .
Dunleavy’s running mate, Nancy Dahlstrom, will be sworn in as Lieutenant Governor early next month, replacing Lieutenant Governor Kevin Meyer, who did not seek another term. As Lieutenant Governor, Dahlstrom will be in charge of overseeing Alaska’s elections.
Alaska Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski won re-election, defeating Donald Trump-backed Republican Party rival Kelly Tshibaka.
Murkowski was the only Senate Republican to vote to convict Trump in his impeachment trial who was on the ballot this year . Trump was not convicted. But his vote was a sore point for the former president, who vowed to campaign against him.
Representative Mary Peltola has been elected to a full term in the House of Representatives, months after the Alaska Democrat won a special election for the seat following the death earlier this year of Republican Rep. Don Young.
Peltola defeated Republican candidates Sarah Palin and Nick Begich, as well as Libertarian Chris Bye in the November 8 election. Palin and Begich were also candidates in the special election.
Their victory, which flipped the seat to the Democrats for the first time in 50 years, it was considered a surprise to Palin. With her latest success, Peltola has secured a full two-year term as Alaska’s only state representative, is the first Alaska Native to serve in the House, and the first woman to hold the position.
Under the state’s new electoral system, races in which no candidate reaches the 80 % of votes will see the candidate who finished with the lowest numbers eliminated. Voters who endorsed that person have their votes reallocated to their second choices, in a process that extends the term to know the results of the elections.
