7.0 magnitude earthquake shakes Solomon Islands and tsunami warning issued

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the Solomon Islands, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS ), and caused the activation of a tsunami warning by the Pacific Warning Center.

The tsunami warning affects a coastal area of ​​the Solomon Islands within a radius of 2015 kilometers from the epicenter.

So far no injuries or deaths have been reported , but people in the capital Honiara reported significant shaking for about 13 seconds.

Amid immediate tsunami warnings, the prime minister’s office advised locals to move to higher ground.

A separate authority, the US-backed Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, also said the threat had largely passed .

The earthquake occurred shortly after 13: 00 local time (00: 13 GMT), at a depth of 9 miles and 11 miles southwest of the coast, according to the US Geological Survey

Caused power outages and caused some in Honiara to run out of the buildings.

The Solomon Islands Attorney General posted images on Twitter of overflowing filing cabinets and documents scattered on the ground after the earthquake.

At the moment, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported that dangerous waves are possible on the islands of the region. The earthquake may produce waves of up to 3 feet above the tidal level in the Solomon Islands.
