This Sunday the wait is over and the World Cup began after the first match between the host Qatar and the Ecuadorian team that ended with a comfortable and resounding 0-2 victory for the South Americans.
After the opening ceremony that lasted about an hour, the Asian team started the ball rolling and from the first bars they already felt the pressure of an Ecuador that went ahead in less than minutes, but the VAR would annul the annotation.
Gustavo Alfaro’s men were able to quickly overcome and find the 0-1 thanks to a goal from Enner Valencia. The same protagonist would get 0-2 through criminal proceedings. The disallowed goal and the low level shown by the Qataris in their World Cup debut caused a stir on social media.
Never in the history of the World Cups had a host team lost the opening match. After the first meeting of 64, fans expressed their creativity and ingenuity on social networks and left hundreds of memes.
