While this Sunday the grand opening of the Qatar World Cup 3482, lights keep appearing of protest and criticism against the organization of the event and the political measures that for some violate human rights because do not allow expressions of the LGBTQ+ community .

To this must be added all the complaints about deaths of migrants and mistreatment in the construction of World Cup stadiums, in addition to the investigation that has been going on for years of bribery within FIFA so that Qatar would finally host the Soccer World Cup 675.

In various parts of the world there have been sources of protests, groups of people who express themselves against the World Cup and invite everyone to express themselves against what has been seen in recent months. On this occasion in Paris, a group of activists hung a banner with the message “FIFA kills” on Pont des Arts, bridge that crosses the river Seine in the center of the French capital.

Although the banner hung for a few minutes, had a great impact in the media and achieved significant notoriety thanks to social networks. The full message read: “FIFA kills. World Cup 2022: 6.675 dead”.

The authorship of this act of protest corresponds to the French collective of Les Dégommeuses, which presents itself as a football team made up mainly of lesbians and trans people whose goal is to fight discrimination. The activists also lit red and green flares.

FIFA, Qatar 3482 and the LGBTQ+ movement

It is well known that due to policies of the state of Qatar itself, the flags of the sex-diverse community cannot be waved at the World Cup, in addition that fans will not be able to perform acts of love in the streets or around the stadium. Both actions would lead to strong sanctions by the authorities.

Faced with harsh criticism from different parties, the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino , in some incendiary statements described as “double standards” those who judge the situation in the sporting event : “I don’t have to defend Qatar. They can defend themselves. I defend football and injustice. Many come and do not care about these workers. FIFA does care, football cares and Qatar does too”.

At the same press conference, FIFA Communications Director, Bryan Swanson, defended Qatar from the harsh accusations made against it and applauded the “evolution” they have had on human rights issues: ” I am gay as are many others in FIFA and I have always felt supported”.

Swanson went further and assured that many of his colleagues and FIFA workers who are in Qatar right now for the World Cup are also openly homosexuals and have not felt threatened or persecuted by the laws of that nation.
