School bus in Kentucky crashes; leaves 18 children and driver with serious injuries

A school bus crashed and ended up on an embankment Monday in Kentucky, with 18 kids and driver airlifted by helicopter or ambulance to hospitals with varying degrees of injuries, authorities said.

Kentucky State Police said that the school bus left the highway on state route 35 when went over the embankment.

According to Magoffin County Schools Superintendent Chris Meadows, the students and the driver sustained minor to serious injuries. So far no fatalities were reported after the accident.

According to police officers, the ages of the students ranged from elementary school children until high school. Before the accident, the bus was on its way dropping off students at various schools. The school bus did not have seat belts, Kentucky police said.

After the event said the Governor Andy Beshear commented: “Kentucky, we have difficult news. There has been a serious bus accident in Magoffin County involving children… Please join me in praying for all involved. We will continue to share updates as they become available.”

The bus was traveling toward Salyersville when it veered off the pavement and into the adjacent ditch, reentered the highway, and crossed both lanes until crashing into a utility pole midway in the driveway.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle in the accident and was left partially trapped under the bus.

There were no other vehicles involved, State Trooper Michael Coleman said, and it was not immediately clear what caused the crash.
